Hematite was known as “Blood Stone” in the Middle Ages, but it was already known in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia for its color and its “sanguine” nature, and for its ability to stop bleeding and to treat various ailments. A highly sought after variety is the “Iron Rose”, a gorgeous, flower-shaped and iridescent crystal that is also found in Liguria and on the Island of Elba.
